Case Study 1: Peace Education in East Africa

Read about the work of several Feed the Minds partners in the developing world.

Feed the Minds has supported the Peace-building, Healing and Reconciliation Project (PHARP) in Kenya to publish a book helping children traumatised by war.

According to PHARP, 90 percent of children exposed to war and conflict are deeply traumatised and there are often few available resources to help them process their experiences. This book aims to educate social workers, teachers, NGOs and families by recounting conflict scenarios using animal characters.

PHARP works to train peace workers throughout the conflict-ridden Great Lakes region of Africa. The organisation also provides training resources in mediation and conflict resolution, publishes a range of books and periodicals, and conducts research into the root causes of violence in Africa.

The organisation was established in 1994, primarily to help reconcile Rwandans affected by the war and genocide there. It has since expanded its activities throughout east Africa and works in Burundi, DR Congo, Uganda, Kenya and southern Sudan. PHARP is now a leading force co-ordinating community and church-based programmes promoting peace-building, healing and reconciliation.
